The following topics will be covered:
- A brief introduction to Type 2 diabetes
- Visual graphic how insulin works.
- Symptoms of diabetes (also useful to know what to look out for, in case a person’s condition changes, for example acute infection/high blood glucose levels.
- Normal blood glucose profile with a Visual graphic of normal à Normal after meals à too high or too low BG ranges.
- A thorough look at doing the most accurate and consistent patient capillary Blood Glucose testing – procedures, and practical “tips and tricks”.
- How often to test and when – also recording of results à reporting of results.
- Common diabetes oral medications that can cause a reduction in BG level – especially to note if it is < 4 mmol/L.
- Brief look at insulin types and pens – different types of insulin and which is more likely to cause reduction in blood glucose levels. Safety aspects of insulin administration – especially needle safety and reduction of needle stick injury
- In depth overview of hypoglycaemia – why it is a high risk, especially to older people, common causes of hypoglycaemia, prevention, recognition, treatment, reporting protocols (which will be localised to each facility).
- Importance of regular food intake throughout the day and monitoring of same.
- Action flow chart (which can be tweaked for each individual facility).
- Use of a “Hypo” box and examples.
