WellSouth and the Southern District Health Board present to you the Southern Spirometry Training course to be held at WellSouth over two days from 8:30am – 3:30pm each day. Catering will be provided. The course will use ATS/ERS guidelines to explore the learning outcomes listed below and accreditation will require a portfolio to be completed within 3 months following the initial 2-day course. Please note this course is a requirement of the upcoming funded Community Spirometry Programme (more details to come). ONLY 2 Registrations per medical centre please. 

Learning Outcomes:

1. Quality Control

  • Use a 3L syringe to perform a spirometry accuracy checks
  • Ensure your calibration syringe has regular checks
  • Set up a Biological Quality Control programme
  • Ensure the correct configuration of your spirometer

 2. Spirometry Testing

  • Clearly instruct your client to perform quality spirometry
  • Apply quality control principles to ensure maximum effort and reproducibility
  • Recognise common errors in spirometry technique
  • Encourage/reinstruct the patient to perform the test correctly

3. Reporting

  • Ensure the correct data is selected for reporting
  • Understand the importance of accurately entering client demographics
  • Choose the most appropriate reference set and ethnicity category
  • Write an appropriate technical comment

 4. Spirometry Pattern Interpretation

  • Interpret spirometry patterns such as normal, obstructive, or restrictive
  • Recognise normal and abnormal flow-volume loops
  • Identify significant bronchodilator response
  • Identify suboptimal spirometry
  • Take into consideration clinical context when reviewing spirometry results
